Why Are Most Chefs Men?

Posted by Ai Shiang in

I'm watching the final week of Masterchef Australia. Feeling nervous for the contestants. I do hope that, that Malaysian girl (Poh Ling Yeow - she's an artist) will be in the top 3. The judges seem to like her dishes.

So far I've only seen one female celebrity chef in the battle. Why are most chefs men? Even celebrity designers (fashion for women) are men.

This industry is too tough for women? Don't you think everything is always twice as hard for the women to achieve compare to men?

Anyway, I was having this big bowl of ramen (japanese noodles), I peeked through the curtain to see who was doing the cooking. Why do women always do the cleaning up?

I just love a big hot bowl of noodle soup during winter. I ordered a Chashu Ramen at Ajisen Ramen 味千拉麵. I think that direct translates into "a thousand flavour noodle". This bowl costs A$11.50 (RM32 or USD9).

Sigh about men dominating our world. Would they do just as well as a house-husband - cleaning, washing, cooking, gardening, caring for babies, under-the-cover antics, etc., etc.? I wonder.. LOL!

Getting cold now in Australia. I still remember when I first arrived in Australia, it is winter there. I feel so excited as it is the first time I feel the cold of winter. A big bowl of hot ramen is really just nice in a cold winter day.

Wow...expensive for a bowl of ramen in RM! But in AUD's pretty reasonable eh?

My dad does the cooking in my family. I do know of men who loves to cook and are good at it.

I am not very sure about why hehehe but in reality most of the common cook are women. Hmmmmnn

HappySurfer,
I think it all depend on that particular man's characters - some would help out at home some couldn't bother (that's no good!)

Superman,
Does it snow in Adelaide? I have never been there.

Mei Teng,
Wow, you dad cooks? That's exciting! Do you join him sometime? I haven't got any men doing the cooking at home.

Marveling,
I agree, most common cooks are women. Just chefs are mostly men, unfortunately.

That's sad truth i think..most people who cook are women, yet when it comes to getting paid and prestige, its the men who become chefs..most fashion consumers have traditionally been female, and yet, like you mentioned, most fashion designers are men whom earn money off women, actually in almost every industry, especially the well-paid ones, it's men whom dominate..even in 'traditional' women's areas such as teaching..you often find women being teachers, and men being principals..i read somewhere that even in primary schools men make up almost half of principals and a majority in high schools despite being a minority in primary schools only..its a result extrenched sexism which causes this sad fact, though fast changing now as women no longer feel compelled to make certain career choices (sacrifices) for the marriage/family..

Men are pigs! j/k. I don't know about fancy cooks or fashion. I would guess that the answer to your questions would have something to do with the percentages of men vs women that go into those professions.

Hcpen,
I like the way you see things. That is a good elaboration!

James,
haha! Pigs? You mean men love to eat heaps? Not many have the time and stamina to pursue such career in food when things come down to looking after the family for the women. You have a good point there.

I don't know why men can do well than women in terms of housework. Blur...My wife always tell me that i cook better than her. Blur...

Why? Maybe because men are more focused while women have other things to worry about like taking care of children, taking care of themselves (to look good) despite being better at multi-tasking than men.

That ramen looks delicious, looks so big too!

hmmmm...i also don't know why men are more dominant on such fields =(

Willie,
Good on you. Then you should cook more for your wife huh?

Foongpc,
I think most men do well in all sort of industries are because they don't have to face a point in time when they need to have children (being pregnant etc). Employers don't wish to have employees whose employment get interrupted just because of family reasons. These reasons mostly come from women unfortunately. Probably that's why it comes down to why man is more focused. Does that make sense?

Marie,
That's something new :o)

Ayie,
The ramen is just the right size for me :o)

Nope. It does not snow in Adelaide. Only at night the temperature can goes to 0 Celsius. I hope it can snow but never for the period I was there. When I went to Blue Mountain,Sydney that time, they said it will snow sometimes around there but I didn't have the chance to bump into one. too bad.
